Hi all

Can anyone tell me where to find this stamp in the catalogue? It is an Orange Free State stamp with the overprint "TF" and the "F" is slightly above the "T". Was this used as a revenue of some sort?

Thanks a lot

Chimo

I'd love to know also!

"TF" on OFS stamps indicates a telegraph stamp.

Thanks Geoff - Do you have any idea how I should price it?

No, my usefulness ends there, as SG refers to them, but doesn't price them (at least in my old catalogue) because of the difficulty of separating postally used from telegraphically used. I'm sure someone with more specialist knowledge/literature will chime in though!

These Telegraphs are now listed in Gibbons. The first (6d) appears to be SG T34 cat. at £1.25; the 1/- brown appears to be SG T35, also cat. at £1.25.

There are further variations on these stamps overprinted V.R.I. (Victoria Regina Imperiatrix) or V.R.I. A T (Army Telegraphs)when the British Army occupied Transvaal in 1900. These can get quite expensive and are worth seeking out.

This quote caught my eye. I found a few items in an older collection that I just obtained. Several examples of the VRI AT (Army Telegraph), with the red stamp lacking a stop after the V.

Can anyone give me an SG number and some sort of value? Thanks in advance.

Your top right stamp looks like sg68 - valued at 30 pence used.

The Army Telegraph stamps are not listed by either SG or the South African Stamp Colour Catalogue

These have been listed in SG Part 1 since the 2013 edition:

1d = SG T42

£1 = SG T48

£4 = SG T49b (no stop after V)

10s = SG T47

That would explain it. I only have the 2010 version.

Which probably also explains why I couldn't find them in the Stanley Gibbons Southern and Central Africa Catalogue which was published in 2011.

According to the SG web site, the 2014 edition of this catalogue includes:
Government telegraph stamps of Natal, Orange Free State and Transvaal, British military telegraphs used in Bechuanaland and South Africa and the 'Reuter's Telegraph Service' stamps of Matabeleland are all listed for the first time

Catalogue value (SG 2017) is as follows:

T42 (1d) £2.75, T47 (10s) £35, T48 (£1) £45, T49b (£4) £550.

The top left corner of the £4 looks damaged but it's a very nice stamp to have nonetheless. Also, your 10s looks like the 'thick V' variety, T47a, which comes in at £85.

Thanks to everyone for their help. This is a very nice surprise. My father-in-law just passed and I found these in his collection. My mother-in-law now finds herself in a tight monetary bind, so I may sell these off and give her a surprise.
