Help With Scott 147 & 148

I acquired specimens of these two in a 200+ stamp lot on ebay and I'd like opinions on whether the right hand perfs have been cut away or they from the right side of the sheets. I haven't been able to find any documentation on the sheet layouts to determine whether the stamps on the right edge were perfed on the right hand side.

Hi tlmcca...Found a few of them on ebay...might be the stamps on the ends of the plate..See samples below..

Some of these older stamps have straight edges since they were cut in the middle of the large sheet into smaller panes. See example of pane of 50 stamps with straight edges on left side and bottom: http://mtmstores.com/live/48-31000.jpg

Thanks, jogil. Based on the image of the sheet of #147 there should only be straight edges on the bottom or left hand side so it looks like mine is either damaged or mis-perfed, probably the former .

I'll plan to keep them mounted until I find a better specimen.

Thanks, oldguy. Unfortunately my local library doesn't give access to Canadian Philatelist, or any other stamp mags. I just joined RPSC so maybe I'll be able to view back issues.

Hi Terry. These may have been printed in sheets of 200, then cut into panes of 50? If so, what you saw in that image was the upper right pane of 50, and you stamps could have genuine straight edges, from either of the left panes.

Yes, I agree. This issue was printed in sheets of 200 which were then cut into 4 panes of 50. All stamps on the inner columns/rows have straightedges. So your stamps come from one of these columns.

Thanks to everyone for your insight. I think I'll keep on the lookout for better specimens but they won't be number 1 & 2 on my list.

Since they are natural straightedges, there's nothing wrong with those stamps. Matter of fact, they are both nicely centered with large margins so I would rate them as Very Fine Used.

These are actually less common than copies perforated on all four sides, but for some reason, many collectors think of them as inferior or faulty.

In 2010, 2011 and 2012 there was a 7 part article in The Canadian Philatelist written by Ernie Wlock. Anyone who is a member of the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada can go online and read these back issues.

Anyone who is not a member should give some consideration to joining the RPSC. A membership application is online at www.rpsc.org. A membership is not expensive but it does carry some worthwhile benefits.

Welcome to the RPSC Terry. I became a member in 1977 and a life member in about 1980 and have never regretted joining. I never figured that I would be managing part of the RPSC National Office but that too is a great retirement gig.

Jogil, congratulations and welcome to the ROYAL. I am sure you will enjoy the value of your membership. I suggest that you go online to the RPSC website and check out the info on next year's convention to be held in Kitchener Waterloo. The ROYAL is a good show to attend especially if you wish to see some of the top exhibits in Canada. This is the time to start thinking about attending or participating.
