Current Canadian Stamp Catalogues

I currently only have the Unitrade Canada specialized stamp catalogue. However, I am looking to collect other current Canada stamp catalogues such as Stanley Gibbons, Michel, Canada Wholesale Supply (CWS), Walsh, etc. Do you have any of these other Canada stamp catalogues and do you have any comments on these since I don't have any of them?

For Newfoundland; get Walsh. For Canada generally, hard to beat Unitrade IMHO. I believe there are specialized catalogues for other Canadian Provinces but if you are using them to collect varieties, etc. you must have very deep pockets as the Provincial issues (N.B., PEI, NS and the BC colonies) are getting very very expensive. If just for the sake of owning catalogues, I buy SG as my standard with Michel for most European countries. All countries seem to have specialized catalogues, so it depends, I guess, on what your objective is.

There are books that specialize in the early issues that Ibuy to specialize and get detailed info. Other than that I only use Unitrade for pricing. SOmetimes I go to the libray and check the latest Scott prices just to see what's going up or down. Scott comes out about now and Unitrade in Nov-Dec so every 6 months you can get an pricing update.

In addition to the Unitrade catalogue, I also own a copy of the 1997 Darnell Stamps of Canada catalogue. Stamps are numbered in chronological order. I am aware of a 2005 edition.

Jogil, if you are looking for catalogues, I suggest you visit the Greene Foundation Saturday June 20 at 10 AM. We are having an open house to mark the 40th anniversary of the Greene Foundation and one of the events is a sale of books that are excess to the needs of the library.

This is also an open invitation for other readers of the FORUM to visit as well. We will be happy to see you and to show off the library, research resources, and give you an opportunity to use our VSC6000 for the forensic examination of any stamps you bring. We are receiving guests between 10 AM and 3 PM.

I have a dozen plus of the Lyman catlogues, that was very popular in the 70 and 80's for Canadian stamps

I have a whole bunch of those Lyman's catalogues as well. I used to live and die by these when I collected as a young boy. I remember when Canada Post brought out a small Stamps & Stories catalogue in the 70's that had the images in colour! Lyman's finally did the same a few years later. I do miss being bale to carry a lightweight catalogue that you could roll up and put in your pocket. Not so easy to do with the latest Unitrade. I think they really need to go with two volumes to make the catalogue more manageable.

Does anyone know what the last year of issue was for the Darnell catalogues? They had some good varieties listed and it would be nice to have the last issue.

That Greene Foundation event sounds really interesting. To bad there was not more advance notice for me to book it into my schedule. I will have to miss this one.

I just checked the online catalogue of the Greene Foundation library and note that the latest edition of the Darnell Stamps of Canada catalogue was 1986 while the latest Darnell E.F.O. catalogue was 2005. I am not sure, but I don't think that prior editions were published annually but were more of a scattered occasional publication.

You don't need to wait for a special occasion to visit the Greene Foundation to sample the library. We are open Monday through Thursday (with the odd exception when the Expert Committee is meeting). You only need to phone the office ahead to ensure that someone will be available to help you (416-921-2073). The best day for visiting is Wednesday (except 3rd Wed each month) when we frequently have 3 or 4 staff (myself included) in the library providing lots of research assistance and friendly conversation. If you bring stamps, we can put them through a quick forensic examination at no cost to you (no certificates will be issued). We really do encourage visits from folks who are serious about their philatelic interests.
