Hi guys...Nothing earth shattering, but this cover is as close to Canada's Confederation date of July 1st, 1867 a I can get...It is dated at July 5th, 1867 mailed from Toronto to Hamilton Ontario...Kinda neat. Anyone got one closer to the July 1st date..? Wait a minute ..It was mailed July 4th, 2867..even closer...haha Robert   |

It's addressed to barristers--a law firm--so the notation at upper right could be a client, case or lawyer reference, telling the firm where to route it within the firm. It doesn't match any legal abbreviation known to me.
Long shot - with letters crushed together, it might say "brief," indicating that one lawyer in Toronto was sending a summary of case details to lawyers in Hamilton for local action. In those days, one or two pages would have sufficed. |

Robert,
Thanks for the enlargement. Would it have anything to do with routing or Way marking for the period of time? That is the end that is shortened.

I wonder if the lawyer Gage is the same family that Gage Park (big park in Hamilton) was named after?

Hi All
William Gage had a publishing company that published books primarily for children, and other topics as well. The company also created stationery items as well. William Gage was also instrumental in creating funds for different TB hospitals in Canada. In fact, he was a main supporter for the Sanitarium here in Muskoka, more famously known as the Muskoka Free Hospital For Consumptives. There is also a building as part of the Muskoka system dedicated to him and known as the "Gage Building".
