If I'm not very interested in stamps issued after 1981, is there a strong reason for me to buy a more recent set of the volumes.

I'm currently browsing ebay for old editions.

You know, it's funny, but 1982 doesn't seem that long ago.

You should try to buy a set about 4 to 7 years old at a cheap price .

you're on the right track. We've sold them in the thrift store where I work for $1.00 a volume.

How much do the Scott catalogs normally go for? I've been using a Kenmore and Mystic catalog to try to identify stamps.

It depends. If your interest is just U.S., then the best catalog is the Scott U.S. Specialized catalog, a single volume. You can find used but recent vintage copies of it for $5-$20 dollars via Amazon. Here is a selection of sellers offering the 2010 edition in that price range:

Here is the 2012 version at prices in the $20-$30 range:

More recent versions get more expensive.

The full six volume set is more expensive, of course. I found an older set for just $50 (and $20 postage.) I don't know what the current year's set would cost.

Not sure what year the "older" set is, but anything more than $5/volume for catalogues older than 5 years is too much $$. Our club has a shelf of free used books & albums that routinely has sets from 2010 and older (we recently cleaned our shelves of catalogues and donated them). If I understood your first comment correctly, you have a set from around 1981? If so, I highly recommend replacing that set of catalogues. The quality and usability of catalogues has improved drastically since then.

Good luck!

Brian

I bought a 2009 Scott Six volume set on CD for $9.95 on ebay. I have it on both my computers and use it a lot.

Brian, thanks for the advice!

K, I'm really looking for a hard copy set, though the idea of having the catalogue on the computer is tempting.

(I actually do have a set on the computer but it's a pdf from 1925!)

I hesitate to bring this up, but the digital copies for sale on ebay are almost all copyright infringements. IIRC, there was only one year that Scott catalogues were sold digitally and due to rampant copyright infringement, were discontinued. I hope that one day they will come available and at that time, I will be happy to pay for them.

Brian is correct. If it's all on one disc, it's an illegal copy. It's not even a copy from the original -- they simply burned it using downloaded pirated/unlocked files.

Haven't seen any at the Goodwill or Salvation Army stores. May have to try the used book store in the next city.
