Optical aids, special lights or what. What do you older folks (like me) do to help?

I keep a magnifying glass at my desk, along with a bright light that hovers over my stamps. Moreover, I am blind in one eye so I try to remember to be grateful for all my blessings.

I have a magnifying glass with built-in light.

I also second the scanning technique. I often find that when I scan a stamp to post here with a question, the scan itself enables me to see the answer without posting. Helps me look a little less foolish a little less often.

Stampalotapus: how does the microscope work? Are you looking at watermarks with it or does it show design detail? Also, can you post a link to where you found it -- the day is not far off for me, I fear.

Good light is essential. And you might have your eyes checked if you haven't done it recently.

I have double vision and was having more and more trouble with my stamps and many of my other favorite activities. A couple of months ago I had an eye infection so I went to the eye clinic to take care of it. I hadn't noticed that it had been over ten years since I'd been in so they insisted that I get my vision rechecked too. Turns out I needed new glasses! Doctor said I probably wouldn't have passed my next eye test to renew my driver's license! I still have a small amount of double vision but Wow! what a difference it makes. I had no idea!

I often just scan at high resolution if I have any questions. But for going through a lot of stamps quickly, hands-free, I use a illuminate magnifying fixture like this one;

You can find them with lens up to about 225% of original size. They clamp onto any typical work surface. If you spend hours staring at stamps, this thing is a life saver.
