kirku, I'm not sure that many people will have time to search through pages and pages of stamps. Do you have images of the stamps that you think are of some value out of the ordinary? |

Did you purchase for yourself or to resell?
If for yourself, the collection is worth £1000 to you, which should be all that matters at this stage. Enjoy going through it and discover what you have purchased.
If for resale, for British Commonwealth stamps you have to sort the stamps into sets and calculate the retail price at an average of 15%-25% of current catalog value, depending on set. |

I went through some of your pages. You have a lot of duplicates and many of your stamps seem fairly common. The upside is that you have a lot of stamps.
For the older stamps, meaning King George V and before, you may have some shade varieties which, at least for me, will enhance a collection. There also are different postmarks possible. I did see that you have a number of King George VI stamps from Ceylon. Some of those can be more valuable, depending on the perforations and, of course, the condition. |

I'm assuming it's just that one stockbook? You paid £1000 for a stamp album and you don't have an idea of how much it's worth?!? KGB has a good suggestion. When you get it, why don't you post specific images of any stamps you think might be particularly valuable. Not an expert, but a very quick glance through, I didn't see anything with a high premium -- mostly common to minor premium items. Some of the possible minor premium items will depend on other factors (e.g., watermark, mint or used). There's always a possibility that something more valuable might show up and cover the purchase price -- but don't count on it. If you are putting up that much money for a collection and you don't have the eye/experience for valuable stamps, I would strongly suggest that in the future you get a rough estimate on either the catalog value or estimated net value BEFORE you bid. |

You have a lot of nice and interesting stamps that will bring you hours of enjoyment and knowledge.
But as far as why your friend encouraged you to pay £1000 for the lot, only your friend can answer that question.
Just enjoy your stamps that you already purchased, and consider yourself a little bit wiser toward your next purchase. |

As Jenny says, whether it's worth the money is ultimately a matter for you to decide, based on the enjoyment you get out of the stamps. In terms of monetary value, if I were to spend £1,000 in an auction, I'd expect a Gibbons CV of around £10,000 (unless more attractive items present). That probably equates to around £4,000-£5,000 for Scott, as I understand the price differentials between the two. |

That is correct, the SG catalog values for GB and British Commonwealth are typically higher than the Scott catalog values. In part, that also reflects the different retail values in GB compared to US.
I would also say GeoffHa's estimate regarding the expected SG catalog value to be reasonable. That should help you be better prepared when you bid on your next purchase. |

Kirku,
you should try to get your money back, there is hardly any items worth more than a few cents each.
If that was up at Auction it would realise less than 10% of what you paid for it,

Glad you were able to cancel it. Also impressed that the seller allowed you to do so.
Still curious why your friend thought it was worth buying at that price. I'm assuming your friend saw something that we all are missing.
Anyway, a lot of good auction lots to be had for £1000. It's just that many of us don't think this was one of them.
Best wishes on your next purchase... |
