The books will be for the ages 8-12 and they may or may not continue with stamp collecting. What is the general opinion.

Sdtom, what are you saying? And what is a stamp book? An album or a book with pictures? Are you writing this? Please elaborate a little!

You'll have to forgive me. I had a stroke and some days I have great difficulty in communicating with others. This morning my head is clear and I'm able to think a lot better. I'm talking about a stamp album such as the one that is sold by H.E. Harris for under $20.00. I'm not familiar with any of these and wanted to get the opinion of the other active forum members. There are others that Mystic as an example offers.

The 3 volume set from Mystic for I think $39.95 is probably the best bang for the buck. Nice write-ups for every stamp/series and that might make them appreciate the history a bit more than just pasting stamps on top of pictures.

I was thinking about that album too. Do you think that 3 volumes would be too much for an 11 year old?

I doubt it - I'll bet he'd love it. Don't forget to get plenty of hinges

They will be excited. I still have the first "real" album my grandmother gave me, she used to order kiloware and pretend it was stamps she got in the mail and we'd spend a few days every summer soaking them off and mounting them in my album.

sdtom,

The American Heirloom is an excellent choice. You can dish the volumes our one at a time. If the hobby "sticks". they can upgrade to the American Heirloom Premium Edition. This only requires buying binders and slipcovers as the pages are exactly the same! Plus the original binders can be used for storage, etc.

By the way, ask for MYSTIC #8104 instead of DS111. That's the 3 Heirloom volumes plus 200 extra US stamps. Same price - $39.95.

sdtom,

MYSTIC also has the advantage of offering blank pages which allows people to experiment with different stamp displays. Might I also recommend 1940's/50's timeframe? Those stamps are really inexpensive. Today's stamps may be more relevant to today's youngsters, but they are wicked expensive.
