There are two grills known for a George Washington 3 cent, an "I" and "H" on white wove paper. Does anyone know which grill this may be on this specific stamp? Does it make a difference with value due to the grill size? Does the value increase with no gum in back of the stamp? Apparently there is a pencil marking on back, but I am not sure if that is correct.

Blazenstar, I left a reply on another thread that you did. First, a Scott catalog would give you the info. Your picture is not clear enough for us to give a precise answer. Secondly, why do you think that a used stamp should have gum?

It is a used stamp because it has a blue cancellation marking noted in the front. It is a beautiful used stamp, in my own opinion. I am not sure if it is an "H" because both can be all values 1c to 90c and an "I" grill are also known on the 3 c too. That is why I am asking..it is clear to see that a grill are noted on front and back. I do believe it may matter if it has no gum.. |

There must be some with these stamps that have gum on the back as well with the 3 cent grills. |

Thank you KGB..i am going to see if I can count them with the points. But does it make a difference due to value from one grill to another on these stamps? |

No gum only makes a difference on a mint stamp that is post office fresh. Yours is used, gum does not come into the picture. KGB above gave you the dimensions for the two known grills on this issue. It is a better picture, but due to hingeremnants etc on the back I can not count the grill. Besides, all the info is in the Scott!

no Peter..scott does not tell you if it is a difference of value with the stamps if grills are different for these specific stamps. I am asking if one grill is more valuable that the other with this stamp, so I don't know if it makes a difference or not.. With other grills on other stamps, for example, the A.B.C.D.Z grills on the 1867, there is a difference with size and value with grills. |

If it does not give a difference in price for a particular grill, there is probably none. But if you read the catalog correctly I think it says the H grill often is quite unreadable, so yours is most likely the I grill. Valuewise? I suggest you keep an eye on sales catalogs and maybe E-bay to find out exactly if there might be a difference in price.

Blazenstar, if the catalog you are using does not give different values for the H and I grilled banknotes then you will need to get a more current Scott U.S. Specialized. In 2013 the I grilled banknotes were designated as major Scott numbers and from then on have been valued separately from their H grilled counterparts. If your used 3 cent example has an H grill it is Scott 136 (2015 Scott catalog value $32.50). If it has an I grill it is Scott 136A (2015 Scott catalog value $100.00). |

In relation to value of this particular stamp, since the perfs at left appear to touch the design (can't tell for sure from these pics), this stamp would have a Very Good centering grade. So if the stamp were perfectly sound, had been expertized and graded by an accredited grading service, determined by the grading service to be a Very Good grade (Grade 50), then the 2015 SSV value from the "Specialized by Grade" section (yellow pages) of the 2015 Scott U.S. Specialized catalog would be $6 for Scott 136 and $25 for Scott 136A. |
