I am ignorant as to the purpose of this device - What is it used for and how do you utilize it?

I read the instructions, but am still at a lose as to what is its purpose exactly.

Please advise...

I am curious whether such an item can prove useful to me.

Regards,
Stampalotapus

This is a very useful tool for "flyspeckers" if everybody had one. It identifies every position on a stamp. Let us say you found a dot somewhere on the stamp that is not supposed to be there. You lay the position finder over the stamp, write down the coordinates, and voila! Does this help?

It looks like about 3 different sellers have them on ebay. Simply search for "Thirkell" in the stamps category and they'll pop right up.

Stammpalotapus, not to rain on your picnic, but I have never seen anyone use this on this side of the pond! Now, if you collect Switzerland it is a different story. The Zumstein catalog lists lots and lots of varieties in their catalog ( the "Spezialkatalog Schweiz" ) and gives the coordinates for each variety. Talk about a useful catalog!

I'm presently doing a study on Canada #610 which is suppose to have 24 constant varieties. With the help of other specialists, I have identified 13 of the 24 and working on the other ones. This tool allows you to locate, track and document these varieties.

There's another bit of thread on this tool at https://goscf.com/t/66560&whichpage=1

Page 1 shows the little protective slipcase they came in, but
on the second page of the thread there is a demonstration of the gauge in use to show a lob position and also to easily check the relative dimensions of a stamp when trying to sort quickly through many of the same...

Now, to call my broker to invest in the Thirkell factory before the run begins.
