Hi,
I recently purchased an ebay lot of covers, mainly for the 3c 1861's, but several others are in the lot, and I could use some help with an ID. Most of the stuff that I collect are classics, so I don't know the 20th century commems well, at least on cover.

Here is the cover:

Scott shows 2 different Panama Pacific Expo Station cancels- this one does not look like the image in my 2011 US Specialized. Can anyone let me know if it's either of the Expo Station machine cancel or hand cancel?

Thanks much!
Ray

This is not an Expo Station cancel, but one of many machine cancels used to advertise the expo. Notice this example is dated before the Expo opened.

... and, the town in the CDS element is Berkeley, whereas the Expo was across the Bay in San Francisco.

That item would be very attractive to collectors of tiny covers.

Also of note, this is not considered a flag cancel by purists. To be a US flag cancel it must have STARS or a STAFF or both.

Your cancel is listed by Bomar, generally considered the leading expert of Expos, as SF15-23, by a Universal machine. Earliest known use is Jan 4, 1914 and last known use is Dec 10, 1915. Value associated in Bomar is nominal at $4 on card, $8 on cover.

The Bomar I am referring to is William J. Bomar's "Postal Markings and Postal History of
United States Expositions" revised and updated 2007.

Hope this helps,

Larry
