Please excuse my ignorance on this matter, but I always thought that the plate number was printed along the side design of these stamps, as is the case with other GB issues of this era. No excusing needed - I have plenty of ignorance, believe me.
The plate numbers are incorporated in the design of the later line-engraved issues - the 1/2d rose-red, 1d red, 11/2d rose-red and 2d blue, all of which have letters in all four corners.
Plating the earlier issues requires a knowledge of the characteristics of each plate, eg differences in the letters in the lower corners of the design - as possessed by some here, but not me!

On your second comment, you're looking at the imperforate issues. The 2d blue, perforated, with stars in the top corners, was issued from 1854. It's found with plates 4, 5 and 6. |

Thank you for this information. The more I am pulling up online the more I am finding this to be the case with this issue. So far what I have been finding leads me to believe that garypage may be in possession of a plate 5 issue, but at this moment I have no true certainty. Regards, Stampalotapus |

The alphabet and white lines look consistent with plate 5 but we have some real experts here who can make that call, so I'll let it ride for now... |

This stamp was printed using three plates... 4,5,6
If your stamp has a Small Crown watermark then rule out plate 6 (leaving 4 and 5)
If your stamp has a Large Crown watermark then rule out plate 4 (leaving 5 and 6)
....or...
plate 4 has alphabet 1 letters
plate 5 has alphabet 2 letters
plate 6 has alphabet 3 letters |
