Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic were the only 2 countries who really tried to help Jewish Refugees to get out from Germany during the shameful Évian Conference in 1938.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%8...n_Conference

Dominican Republic also helped to collect money for Israel's Independence war refugees in 1958.

Today is World Refugee Day; check the UN home page.
The Ivory Coast issued a commemorative for 50 years of the UNHCR. 10 years later: "The urban warfare in Abidjan is causing further population displacements as it intensifies. Large numbers of internally displaced people (IDPs) could be seen in various areas of the city, where some 300,000 people have been forcibly displaced since November." (Taken from the UNHCR site, March 2011) Thousands fled to neighboring countries.

Soon it will be the 4th of July. The times before and after that date way back in 1776 were terrible for those settlers in the 13 colonies who favored the British. Tens of thousands of United Empire Loyalists had to flee if they were not willing to accept the new government. The statue in Hamilton, Ontario, unveiled in 1929, was dedicated to the refugees who fled to Canada; it is depicted in the stamp of 1934.

(Is there anyone out there who knows the name of the sculptor?)

"Refugee 71," designed after a painting entitled "Flight" by Icelandic artist Ásgrímur Jónsson (1876-1958), printed by photogravure, and issued by Iceland on March 26, 1971 to publicize the joint northern campaign for the benefit of refugees, Scott No. 428, Facit No. 487. Bonus: Waterfalls.
