I was intrigued by LarryBruce's post on 06/11/2014 in the thread Help on how to mount peel off adhesive stamps...(https://goscf.com/t/37966) in which he mentions using a glue stick to mount self-adhesive stamps. wt1 followed up with the comment that there are repositionable glues available and specifically mentioned Tombow's product (http://tombowusa.com/mono-adhesive-removable.html) which Tombow states is acid-free and meets the Photographic Activity Test. The posters specifically cautioned about applying such a product directly to stamp and stated that they would only apply to the paper backing.

Has anyone heard of a test being performed to determine the efficacy and safety of using such a product to mount stamps by applying directly to the stamp? If not, any thoughts on how such a test might be designed?

KGB: Very funny! My doctor tells me I need to express the thoughts that the voices are urging me to have if I want to get better.

Similar discussions regarding Tombow and tape have occurred in the past.

There was a discussion of scrapbooking tape (vs Tombow) here: https://goscf.com/t/44873&SearchTerms=tombow

and Scotch Removable Tape here: https://goscf.com/t/9187&SearchTerm...movable,tape

I've bought many collections over the years, saving what I needed and either selling or donating the remainder. The worst possible scenario, to find in a collection, is a former owner who used either glue or tape of some sort to mount stamps. Stamps and pages are significantly damaged, usually beyond any hope of salvage.

I've asked kjh for an update on use of the Scotch 811 tape mentioned in the 2010 topic posting. It will be interesting to hear what the experience has been.

ClimberSteve: Are you talking about products such as mentioned in the OP or older adhesives which cannot be repositioned?

All. Fortunately, I have not seen much of this inappropriate hinging with collections assembled in the recent past.

Based on what has been said here and what I've read on Stamporama I think the risk is greater than the benefit. Thanks for everyone's input.

Hmmm, I thought I had posted here, but perhaps I forgot to submit the post.

In brief, do NOT use the peelable "glue stick". They may work great for photographs/layout board (I've used them before), but they are not suitable for stamps, regardless of how "archival" they may be.

If you're truly not concerned with what happens to the collection after you pass away then you should do whatever seems best for you now. I'm not doing the stamp collection for anyone else who will sell it to the general stamp collecting population when I die. I'm being selfish but I don't care what happens after I die. I use the stamp mounts from Mystic and they seem to work just fine for my purpose.
