I have a very nice postal cover from Africa, Madagascar. It was my first African postal cover. It is the 10th year anniversary of Human Rights. I don't know much about the African postal covers or stamps if you would like to share I would be very appreciative. History?

I would call this a First Day Cover instead of a Postal Cover, especially since it didn't travel through the postal system - no address. Otherwise it's nice.

The French colonies are not my strong suit, so please take what little I write here with a grain of salt.

The cover is interesting as it includes a stamp from 1957 on its reverse. You might note that it is marked Madagascar.

The stamp that 'makes' the First Day Cover is marked differently, reflecting the greater independence gained by the peoples of this land. Now they are called the Malagasy Republic, a self-governing republic that was for a time a member of the so-called French Community. This stamp was issued only a short time after the French approved their own new constitution. The Malagasy Republic didn't elect its first president until the following year in early to middle 1959. The new president began working immediately for the complete independence of the nation, which was won in 1960 when one sees a new form of stamp.

The English that is printed on the cover is what makes the cover interesting/embarrassing. There never was a "Malgash" Republic except in a few minds. This is how the English world pronounced 'Malagasy' and from where one obtains the French "Malagache," but "Malgash" strikes me as being as wrong-headed as someone calling Native Americans "Indians."
