So someone gave me a pile of stamps. These are barely stuck to the pages. I'm not going to look until I know the best thing to do. So if you were to want to sell these to someone who would appreciate it, how would go about doing so.

Those are very interesting stamps and I have all of them in my collection myself. They're from a very interesting time and place in history. However, I hate to be the one to break it to you, but practically everyone else also has them in their collection as well. These are some of the most common stamps around, and they are worth very little monetarily. Enjoy them for what they are, you'll be lucky to be able to buy lunch with the proceeds from selling them.

The stamps are most likely hinged on there, I wouldnt try and take them off till you learn how, looks like someone did a good job and if you have a whole album like this you could get something but the pages themselves dont look real old so just the fact that they are hinges in there and not in mounts would tell me dont get your hopes up too much. Just keep it and keep searching and learning and you might get lucky.

I think I've found the worst stamp collection of all times. Whenever you come across a stamp that would be valuable, it's missing from the book.

I have a book of stamps from Isreal (MNH) and all the good ones are missing. I'm about to give up.

collecting is fun and for most its not about the money, what you found is nice and it was someones pride and joy even if it wasnt a pot of gold.

I've been collecting for 40 years. The quote describes my worldwide collection.

There is another response, if you are interested. The reason the "keys" are missing is because the person who put the collection together in the first place was not willing (or able) to pay the price to add them. Are you?

Collecting is an impulse, and not everyone has it. Present a true collector with an album page missing a single stamp, and s/he will agonize over that page until the blank spot is filled. Those who do not have that impulse, that drive, sometimes see it as craven, a weakness. But it is a force to be reckoned with for anyone who has the impulse.

Stamp collecting in its earliest days was called a "mania." One of the early words for stamp collecting was "timbromania" derived in part from the French word "timbre" (stamp). Historically more men than women have this impulse, but I have never seen an explanation of why this might be. Nonetheless, among those who do there is no difference between men or women in the sense of challenge and fulfillment that collecting brings.

Do yourself a favor and search yourself to see if you have what it takes to become a stamp collector. You may discover a whole new world of satisfaction if you do.

But to your initial inquiry:

If you are determined to resist the charms of collecting, then let me suggest that for material like this you are best advised to sell off the albums intact. Or break them into country units or regions of the world in file folders. Do not attempt to sell the stamps individually. And in your descriptions emphasize that you are not a collector and did not attempt to check the collection for varieties.

Sorry to upset you. I was trying to pay rent because my husband was layed-off. I thought I might have a chance.

Now that I know that there was so much effort and so little value I'm just going to keep the book because it's cool. My husband thinks it's garbage and wants it out of the living room but I think it's a nice piece of history.

As has been mentioned, that describes a lot of collections. Not every collector can afford to fill in those missing spaces, and some that can afford them simply choose not to spend the necessary money to fill the spaces. Some collectors are intent on filling every space and will spare no expense to fill them, some are content to just own a representative sampling of stamps, knowing (and accepting) that they will always have some empty spaces. Even collectors who strive for completion have to deal with this to an extent, since most collecting areas have at least a few very expensive and/or very hard to find stamps. Due to some very rare items in US Philately, for example, only 1 complete collection can ever be formed by collectors at any time. Even if you had unlimited funds, you'd still have to wait until the 1-cent Z-grill stamp comes up for auction, which happens maybe once every couple decades.
