Hello I am new to the forum. I have a World Wide collection I bought a decade or so ago. I would like to separate them to sell. I would like to figure out a fair value for them is there a reasonable quick way to determine a value for what I have? They were collected early pre 1950's I believe because I found a sheet of paper that has a office style stamp of 1943 on the back which was used to hinge stamps. They all start very early and end in the 1940's. There also is what appears to be Germen writing on it. Many of them are uncirculated and or V or even VF it appears the collector purchased the nicest ones they could find. The collections are not complete but what is there is nice. ebay is a flood zone for stamps so it is hard to dig a value out of all that per stamp. Any suggestions? Here are the countries I have Imperial Russia, Greece, Brazil, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Haiti, Bavaria, Dutch Indies, Peru, Venezuela, India, Bahrain, British Native States, Paraguay, USA. Thank you for your suggestions!

Welcome. Most larger public libraries have copies of the Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue, which lists and values every government-issued postage stamp ever made, worldwide 1840 to date (6 volumes). It'll take you a bit of time to learn how to use the catalog and start finding stamps, but it will give you a market value for any given stamp - a very high and unrealistic value, mind you. If you can post some pictures or scans, people here can let you know if you've got anything of value or if you just have common stamps worth very little. |

Ok! I may try the Library. The stamps that I see that are worth thousands seem to be everywhere on ebay for pennies on the dollar. I tried to figure out the USA stamps, Colors, Water Marks, Perf measurements, Cancellations, WOW if only I was a kid again when time stood still! I am scanning each collection individually. If anyone is interested in Looking at a particular country then please let me know. I have started posting them on ebay to see if I get a response. I am trying to highlight the ones I think are worth more then others by looking at dealer sites as well. Thank you |

If you can post a few pictures here, we'll be happy to at least give you an idea if you've got anything valuable or not. Be sure to read the catalog very carefully if you're getting your values from there. Many valuable stamps look nearly identical to stamps that are essentially worthless, so don't automatically assume you've found the rare variety. Read the text and the footnotes carefully to guide you to the correct listing. Also be sure to read the introduction where it states what catalog values are based on (condition and grade, etc) as most stamps don't meet these criteria and thus sell for significantly less than catalog values. Just keep in mind that anything with a catalog value of a few dollars or less is really worth pennies. Stamps with a catalog value of more than a few dollars generally have real world values of 10-50% or so of catalog values, depending on condition and other factors. |

Ok That sound like a good idea going to the library. I have several listed on ebay I just through a dollar number up. I will be praying for a sell off so I can pay off my Debt. You can go to "see other Listings" for the others I have several more to go today. Here is a link to One of the Venezuela's http://www.ebay.com/itm/-/111771859302? |

I am no expert on stamps from Venezuela, but a quick look at the catalog and comparing them to your ebay listing says you have overpriced the stamps - by a HUGE amount. As a piece of advice, if there is some kind of a high-valued gem on those pages that make it worth that price (and there could be), perhaps you should point it out to the browser/potential buyer. |

I dont know alot about world stamps so I dont know if your asking price is inline or not but most people dont have huge money to spend on them so if individual stamps are worth alot on those pages you might want to sell them seperate to break to price down. |

I suppose that the Venezuela might get up to a Gibbons CV of around £200, which would make its retail value about £20. |

From what I can see from the ebay listings, your starting prices for these lots should be in the $10 range. You can pick up whole - and I mean very substantial - country collections for the prices you're asking for a handful of attractive but fairly unexceptional stamps. |

The nice 'uncirculated' stamps that I spot are all hinged, which makes them less desirable.

You are just wasting your time and ebay bandwidth at these prices. You need to obtain a realistic understanding of stamp prices. That cannot happen quickly or easily. Like anything worth doing, it's worth doing well. |

If you are serious about selling these stamps list them on ebay as an auction with a starting price of $2 or $3. You have a nice clean collection, you're pictures are good and you will get a fair price. I do it all the time. With the starting prices you have now I don't think you'll sell many at all. As an example here's a Venezuela Collection I sold recently; http://www.ebay.com/itm/Venezuela-C...0283527?rd=1 |

Ken is right. That is a relatively simple and easy way to learn about prices. I amend my comment by deferring to KRelyea. Whut he says. |

Hieronymus I have a confession to make, after selling 100s if not 1000s of collections I couldn't put a fixed price on my collections, I would be guessing. That's why I always use the auction format and I am almost always satisfied with the results. |
