Good day to all. I need some assistance. This is a Revenue Documentary two with a violet surcharge used on cardboard. Can someone please help me if this is considered a Scott 191 surcharge same as R 185 in violet or another scott's number?? Thank you in advance.

It's not violet on my screen. Since we don't know what faded it, we don't know why it looks like it does. All we can say is that it wasn't water; the overprint was on a water soluble square of a varnish like substance, to keep the stamp from being cleaned and reused. |

it is absolutely the color violet for the surcharge, the vendor who sold it to me also said the color of the surcharge was not black but a color of purple(violet). He was debating to sell it to me because he thought it may be an expensive stamp but decided to let me purchase it. |

He was looking at the scott's album when he was selling it to me. I want to know..he was looking at the stamp for a period of time and wondered himself. The cancellation is definitely a purple shade. Doesn't the numerical two have to be the purple shade not just the cancellation to be considered 191b? |

Yes..i understand what you are expressing. Before surcharging a square solution varish was applied to the middle of some of the stamps. Thank you for your assistance.

blazenstar - What you have presented for opinion here is a normal R191. This cannot be the violet overprint R191b, as the overprint is not correct for the rarity. Please compare your stamp against this one (image courtesy of Siegel Auctions). For all four minor numbers of R191, the surcharge overprint is of the "outline style" from the preceding set from 1900 (R184-189). My offer to send a Scott Specialized US Catalog to you free of cost is still open. This catalog is a requirement for any collector of classic US material as it provides superior information over the Classic 1840-1940. I use a Michel catalog for my Prussia collection and JSCA & Sakura catalogs for my Japan collection for this exact reason. |

Thank you all for you assistance. Appreciate to see the 191b what it looks like. Don, no.he is not the same vendor. I go to different locations, and this gentleman has sold me some interesting stamps in the past, but he doesnot deal with auction houses or ebay ect. He sells at an another market. I never seen him at the stamp shows either but he is possibly busy those days. He has good stamps most of the time. I like his world stamps. So, it is okay with me, since it was not so expensive..He does check scotts while I look through his books at the same time. Usually he is on target with his assessments. He does not collect many revenues. This does have a purple cancellation, but the surcharge is different. Glad I asked in here. Thank you again all of you! |

With the revenues, I think I will stick with the stamp shows to purchase them in the future. learn every day something else. Have a good day all! |

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the purpose of an overprint of '2' on a documentary marked two dollars? |
