Just picked up this unused copy of a half-cent Jubilee. Zooming in I noticed a number of dots in the margin and an interesting vertical line in the 'R'.
Any speculation on the cause of these marks? I'm particularly interested in the line.
The dot and line in the "R" are guide dot and guide line used is laying out the plate. The other dots just may be little pits in the plate that got ink in them during the printing.
Very interesting about the guideline. I just saw another stamp for sale, and was wondering. In this example, the guideline is very clear at the top of the stamp down through the middle.
jjmclell...I would be more interested in the possibility of a re-entry..There are definite lines between the printed design..Maybe a better close up would help.
I take it you're referring to the light horizontal lines? I can definitely see one the top arrow is pointing to. That's the highest resolution I can get from my scanner though @ 2400 DPI...what would you use to get a clearer pic?
jimclell, The marks that wert is talking about may be a re-entry but the original post are not.
2400dpi is more than enough but putting it up on this board may be tough because of the size restrictions. I would try to crop the pic to show just the top left corner to display it here in a larger size.
Ok, here's the clearest I can get it without getting some new equipment - not much of an improvement. The first pic is the top left corner pointed out earlier. I also included a picture of the top line of the right bar of the 'V' b/c it shows a thin line that is perhaps doubling. I also included a pic of a line that cuts thru the right border.
