it appears that the Toronto CSDA stamp show coming up in November 6-8, 2015 will be the last such stamp show. See: http://canadianstampnews.com/a-litt...stamp-shows/

I don't have much success at finding stamps or covers at shows like this so I rarely attend. I go to this one show because I want to buy the new Untrade catalog but I haven't bought stamps from this show for over 10 years.

I like to look through boxes/binders of stamps and covers to find stamps that I want. I haven't been able to do that at this show because the dealers don't have a selection of Decimal Issue or Large Queen Issue stamps or covers. Even Small Queens are tough to find here.

Other than selling stamps and supplies, is there anything else that is on the agenda at this show?

I liked the BNAPEX because there were exhibits to look at, stamp club meetings to go to, Stamp Collecting presentations to watch, etc. There was alot going on at any given moment. And this is what you'll see at ORAPEX and other Stamp Shows. Many even have Major auctions during the show. City Stamp Montreal (Robert C.) could have had his auction at the show and on-line at SAN at the same time.

It's too bad they decided to just stop the show.

I heard this was happening, and it makes me sad. jimjung, I don't know if you've ever been to a CSDA show, but I've always had success finding something, even if it wasn't what I may have been looking for. And the last one I attended, hosted by the North Toronto Stamp Club had quite a few amazing exhibits, so there was lots to look at. It was a drag when they moved it out to the airport a year or so ago, though parking is free, it's not as convenient for a lot of people as when it was down at the Exhibition Grounds.
I fear this is just another nail in the coffin, as it were. Brick and mortar dealers are harder to find and the shows become fewer and farther between. Collecting online is fine, but it lacks the personal touch of actually being able to speak with someone who has knowledge and expertise.

jamesw - I feel the stamp dealers are not being creative enough. They are following - to their doom - a model that worked for a hundred years. They need someone to come in and give them a good shake. There is life in them thar hills but you gotta ferret it out.

jamesw, I love going to this show and attend every year to get my Unitrade. I'm kinda upset that the people running the show have let it get to this point.

I just think that they could have used their imaginations or followed some of the other shows ideas and made something of it so that it could have continued on. There could have been reasons why they decided to end it. I do know that SAN appears to be doing well.

That is sad. We have a small Show in Fredericton twice a year and though they are fairly small (usually 6 or 7 deallers) we usually have about 60 collectors come through. I always find some items that I need and because I look after the coffee and baking some of the dealers give me extra discounts on my purchases.

In 2016 our club is hosting BNAPEX, we are really exited about it and are working hard to make it a great show and I hope some of you are able to attend so that I can meet some of you.

Dianne

Some smaller shows should consider going in with the coin people for a joint show.

Like most things, if there is enough interest shown by the participants(collectors), then someone (dealer or organization)will see its value and take command or revive it at a later date. So, if you haven't attended a show in the past, show your support by attending this one and let the dealers know that you want it to continue. If you aren't pleased with the present format, now may be the time to suggest ways of making it a better show.

I remember how big both STAMPEX and PHILEX used to be in Toronto especially at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel in the 1980's and 1990's. Will the only stamp related show left in Toronto after the CSDA show be the UNIPEX show?

The local clubs still hold shows on a smaller scale and these seem to be more crowded than the larger shows.

NORTH YORK PHILATELIC SOCIETY - Annual Exhibition June 10 at the Goulding Community Centre, west of Yonge off of Goulding Avenue (between Finch & Steeles)

NORTH TORONTO STAMP CLUB - Yorkminster Baptist Church, 1585 Yonge Street (north of St. Clair). Sales Circuit, auctions, speakers. Visitors always welcome.

SCARBOROUGH STAMP CLUB - Meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesday, September to June at 7pm at Cedarbrook Community Centre.

TORONTO HARMONIE STAMP CLUB - New members or visitors are always welcome.

WEST TORONTO STAMP CLUB (westtorontostampclub.org ) - Auctions, dealers, speakers, study group, annual exhibition. Visitors always welcome.

Unipex will now be occurring twice a year, and the CSDA dealer gang will be combining with the coin dealers too have semi annual shows, in hotels in the Toronto area. So it is not all lost going forward.
