It looks like Chambers, MONT, to me, but there is no such precancel. And I searched for Chambers across the whole country and apparently there is NO town called Chambers that issued precancels.

Hmm. The scan didn't work well on the purple ink -- I am pretty sure it ends in -ERS. Looks like a B before that, but not sure.

Second scan follows in separate post - trying to get it more legible.

A long shot, but any suggestions for either the city or the state? And / Or any idea what type it could be, so that I can look it up in reverse? Thanks.

Dunno, I cannot find anything like it, I suspect it is a postcancel or fake - I think the uneven bottom line makes it suspicious.

Trying to blow it up a little the 2 last letters in the town both look like they could be S with maybe an A before that.

Thanks -- I tried a few more combinations with no luck. I hadn't seen the bend in the line, so now I agree.

It does look like "Chambers", so I googled Chambers, MT and there doesn't appear to be such a place, yet accepting it as a post cancel or fake, I would really think that is what it says ... another mystery. Ah, precancels; such a joy.

I don't think it is a fake. Who would fake something that can't be read?

If you have access to any color filters or colored cellophane, try putting a red one over the stamp and scanning the results. The blue component of the marking should show through much better.

This may not help at all. I increased the contrast and then did a value invert.
