I've tried to look on the web to determine which particular precancel type I have on this J81 Chicago postage due and cannot seem to find any info. Where can I find the different types of precancels. I see L4 and 286 in other posts but have no clue where to look or if there is a specific catalog or data base which shows examples for comparison.

This is called a DLE 'double line electro'. They are a VERY popular precancel specialty. It is style PSS-243. CV 0.10 USD, very common. The PSS catalogs can be bought at www.precancels.com . Some references are online, but not the DLE catalog. |

I see your point, and am equally curious. Hopefully someone will provide more details. Perhaps 716˝ would be accurate at this point in time. I hadn't considered it a Bureau Precancel and more a Local from what information I was able to locate. Thanks for the help, Don |

Thanks Chasa! I guess maybe that's why I couldn't find it on the site. Maybe time I considered another investment in catalogs as I find myself with more and more odd styles I can't match up. |

I would be a happy buyer of any Chicago-243's I don't have... current collection of 1931 dues: PS: these are 'local' precancels, not 'bureau'. |

I like the idea of if its between 2 types just calling it a 1/2 but I dont think it will fly to well with the precancel collectors who have done all this work to catalog them lol |

Doubles, maybe the first impression didn't cover all the stamps on the pane, maybe they made an honest or careless mistake, maybe they were fooling around, maybe it was Friday after a long lunch. These were overprinted in the back room of the local post office. |

Thanks again Chasa,
I appreciate the education. Always enjoy learning more details. I made a note of those empty spaces you have and if I come across any, I'll email you for your address.

Just curious on your first album page with these postage due precancels: What is the 10-cent Double-N invert? In other words, what is "Double-N"?

Interesting. I never knew such a thing existed (at least I never saw one before). But I guess with precancels, many such variations were possible. |
