Revenue Documents From Last Weekend's Show

Nothing earth shattering, but some aesthetically pleasing presentations, an imprint capture, and a double transfer.

This first one yet again showcases the wonderful quality control of the era. Great centering on those R19c!




I've seen this cancel around quite a bit; nice to get an example attributing the cancel. Love the document watermark!






A couple of 6-centers, which you don't see all that frequently on documents. Not as cool as a solo use, but I like them nonetheless.






An R6c margin imprint capture. Not exceptionally scarce, but neat anyway.




This was a nice cherrypick, an R115 with double transfer at top, on a document from "Goodyear's India Rubber Glove Manufacturing Company."






And lastly, one of the tougher part perfs to find on document, and this example is exceptionally well centered.

A six cent solo use would be a very tough rate to find. It could only be between soon after May 12, 1863 (the day of the first delivery) to July 31, 1864 (the rates changed Aug. 1). And it could only be for two specific usages. A promissory note for between $200.01 and $400 payable in 63 to 93 days, or for a promissory note between $20.01 and $200 payable between four months, three days to six months, three days. I could find no other documentary tax rates of exactly 6 cents.
Of course there are proprietary rates of 6 cents on medicines, matches, playing cards, photographs, etc.

The dealer I got these from said he had a solo 6-cent usage as part of this lot, but it sold a few weeks prior... story of my life.

I'm amazed (and envious!) that you can find such cool revenue items at a local show.

In all fairness, the documents above came from a well known national dealer that unexpectedly set up the second day. I would have seen him next month at Chicagopex anyway, but this gave me a leg up on some new material.

He comes to our show every year as a buyer (apparently the pickings are good here in podunk).
