Scott 46 from 1879. (That's for the perf 14. And the color is listed as claret. Your stamp is a bit brighter.)

As floortrader stated, the item is a cutout from a postal card.

Looked in my Michel postal stationery catalog, and your item is the correct color (claret) of the perforated stamp rather than the postal cards (reddish brown). Then I looked at your pic again, and the margins are cut really close. Looks trimmed, and as Jenny2u said/questioned, mounted on paper backing.

Ya..Back has writing on it..Must have been attached to a post card or something..Or cut out...Funny the lighter colour of the stamp has no writing on it..Just the darker colour as though it still has paper attached to it.

This cut square could originate from either of the below postal cards...

1889 H&G 16 10c brown red on cream b[115mm:80mm], (a) Provincia at lower right, ('89)
<or>
1893 H&G 26 10c brown red on cream d[140mm:90mm], (93, 94, 95)

It would have been nice to have the entire, but some collectors get scissor happy it appears.

Regards,
Stampalotapus
