Haven't scratched the Zeppelin cover itch in awhile. Was glad to pick this up earlier today. Not rare but I didn't have it.

Does anyone recognize the small cachet. It's silver, and I haven't seen it before.

Hi stampcrow

I too have that cover, but w/o the silver cachet. This is the first time I have seen it.

I do not recognize the maker of the cover - there were so many stamp dealers, stamp supply companies and individuals who were making private cachets back in the day. Usually the bigger companies and dealers were making theirs in a much larger and more elaborate style so my guess is this one is more likely to have been manufactured by a smaller dealer or individual.

I believe it is a version of a Rice cachet

I think it is less common than the typical Rice cachet above.

Chasa, sure enough. It fit the budget lol. This was the only item I took home.

There's some staining and the purple cachet isn't a great strike. But the stamp is centered nice. Mostly, that pesky silver cachet really tickled my fancy.

I believe this is the same John Einset addressed on the cover. He actually had a seedless grape named after him.

I pulled a few lines from the article and copied below.

Quote:
Interest in pomology, for Professor Einset, had its beginning at Geneva, where, as a boy, he worked picking fruit in
the Experiment Station orchards. He joined the staff of the Station's Department of Pomology in 1942, and, upon
his retirement in 1973, Cornell appointed him professor of pomology and viticulture emeritus.
Professor Einset was one of the outstanding fruit cytogeneticists and fruit breeders of the world.
