Working on my Big Blue this morning and fill holes in Japan, I can't seem to identify this one using either my Scott Specialized or the stampworld website.

It does have the Syllabic Control Letter above "S" in "SEN" but it seems to match the 4 SEN stamp rather than the 2 SEN. The one pictured on stamp world has a circle surrounding the symbol while mine has a square box around it.

any ideas?

thanks

As a complete amateur with these Japanese ones... I would suggest 1874 plate 18

Thanks Scotzm. I agree. After re-reading the Scott Catalog, I see that this stamp can have many different Syllabic letters which was throwing me off by looking at just one other example

thanks!

Mike, would you mind if I borrowed your image? I participate in a small discussion group on Japanese philately, and would like to ask them some questions about it, if you're ok with that.

For one thing, it does look like it's engraved, whereas forgeries typically (or always?) are not. My other question to them would be about the cancel which, if legit, would add a premium.

Be my guest Phil. I'd be interested to hear anything you find out about it as well. The scan makes it look better than it does in person LOL

Thanks, Mike! I'll send you a link to the discussion, if any.

By the way, if you run a finger over the printed surface, you can feel the raised lines of the design, right?

Yes, definitely raised. Scanner is a CCD Epson so it scans in 3d. That's why it's so clear in the scan
