I'm wondering if anyone here knows enough Old Cyrillic to decipher these cancels - the only one that I think I can read is SALO, which doesn't look Cyrillic nor does Salo sound like a Russian place name.

Any help figuring these out would be greatly appreciated!

Jimjamtwo, you're correct about Salo not being Russian. It is a town in Finland. Now for the rest...........

The Salo postmark is on a Finnish stamp from the time when it was a part of the Russian Empire. Salo is located in Karelia and, I think, belongs now to the Republic of Karelia which is a part of Russia today.

#1070;#1088;#1100;#1077;#1074; - Yuriev - There are more then one Yuriev in Russia, but this one I guess would be one in Estonia current name Tartu.

#1057;#1077;#1074;#1072;#1089;#1090;#1086;#1087;#1086;#1083;#1100; - Sevastopol - Is a city in Crimea, was Russian, then Ukrainian, and now, with annexation of Crimea, Russian again. It is a major Russian Naval Base, basically the reason why Russia annexed Crimea. The city has very reach history.

#1061;#1072;#1088;#1073;#1080;#1085; - Harbin - an interesting place too. It was established by Russia, but actually a part of China. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harbin

Rest later.

I read the cancel on the first stamp in row five as PERNO which might be Parnau in today's Estonia. The one on the right side of row five I read as KAZAN ZABULACHNOYE. guess in a district in the city of Kazan. Third stamp in row two I read as KOVNO which I think I is modern Kaunas in Lithuania.

KGB covered Salo, it is actually on Finnish stamp. Salo sounds very much like Russian (Ukrainian to be accurate) translate something like bacon ummm :)

Next one after Salo is Belc (Balti) currently in Moldova https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C4%83l%C8%9Bi

Third looks like Kovno, as noted by DJ is Kaunas https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaunas

Last one in the row look like Novo-Vilejka in Vilnius, Lithuania. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naujoji_Vilnia

Row number three:

First looks like Ponevez - currently in Lithuania https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panev%C4%97%C5%BEys

I can only read the second part of the name on the second stamp which is Lukishki.

Cannot read the last two stamps.

I guess it is getting late and my eyes are getting tired. The only other name I can read besides Perno and Kazan covered by DJ is the very last stamp.

Last stamp looks like Vorot'kovo, a small village in Tver' region of Russia. That is what came up on Google. There is also Vorotkovo without ' in Pskov region, like 32 people living in that one.

Thanks everyone for the responses! I haven't been able to follow them very well, so I can't offer a complete list of identifications yet. I don't know what the first two in the first row are, but I think the last one is HARBIN. Is that correct?

Regarding the last stamp, what is the difference between VOROT'KOVO and VOROTKOVO? And what does the "CM" after the place name refer to?

blazenstar, there are no identifications on the back of any of the stamps.

Oh, most definitely pork fat, not bacon... The best quality #1089;#1072;#1083;#1086; should have a pale pink colour in the centre and lots of salt on the outside (scrape this off before eating). Winter comfort food with vodka.

Otherwise, this is a lovely set of postmarks and I'll spend a bit of time looking at them to see what else can be deciphered. There's a nice Kazan (#1050;#1072;#1079;#1072;#1085;#1100;) postmark in there as well on the 15#1082; Nicholas I stamp (3rd image, 4th stamp).

Thanks for looking, Tim!

At the moment, I'd be most interested in knowing what the first two are. They're both clearly legible, but I'm not sure anyone has yet said what they are.

But what is all this stuff: (#1050;#1072;#1079;#1072;#1085;#1100;) ???

jim

Look through the thread, third post down after the picture. Numbers means an attempt to type Cyrillic letters, doesn't work on this board.

jimjamtwo, you're getting some nonsense and some wrong info about the town of Salo. Salo is not in the Finnish/Russian province of Karelia, but on the south coast of Finland. It is a small town a short distance west of Helsinki.

danko, that makes me wonder why people are still doing it.

Unfortunately, it makes it impossible for me to tell which postmarks you were discussing! Are you not able to edit your posts so they'll make sense?

Petert4522, thanks, I found that out last night when I looked up Salo. Apparently it's where the Nokia headquarters is located (although there's also a town called Nokia in Finland!)
