So what are they worth, knowing that the cancels are fake? (And do you think the cancels could be removed? Would one want to even try?)

If the cancels are fake, the stamps are worth very little. However, the real world value for a used set is less than EUR 500, so no need to cry or punch anyone.

My guess would be the fact that some of them have the same town cancel and they are all SON are good indicators of fake cancels.

The reason I asked is because to me it looks like CTO, cancelled to order. That would not be fake cancels, would it?

They were retuned to a customer March 25,1989 in a letter written by Karl E. Becker of the stamp auction firm of WILLIAM A. FOX AUCTIONS INC. of Springfield N.J. ,There was no negative cert. included in the letter or signature on the backs of the stamps . I am sure the firm submitted to someone for the opinion, stated in the letter .

Either these are also fake, CTO or just not in demand - http://www.ebay.com/itm/ITALY-1923-...047675.l2557

They couldn't even get a bid.

Here's a partial set of five for $50 - http://www.ebay.com/itm/ITALY-KINGD...291591452250 This isn't the first time this particular set has been listed.

The completed listings are all over the place on ebay. It doesn't seem to be a rare set. Plenty of examples - many just don't sell or they sell for greatly deflated prices. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odk...i&_sacat=260

However, what I'm not seeing on ebay - any of these stamps on cover aside from one sold with a Somalia overprint and that had 17 bids. To find them on cover would be the real prize.

Speaking of faked cancels, if anyone is actively buying Rhodesia stamps, here is a great online database of faked and forged cancels; http://www.cjrstamps.com/forgeries-database.html

As can be seen from the scope of the database, hobbyists should be very careful when purchasing these stamps on ebay. I think that a large percentage are cleaned, fiscally-used with forged cancels. Arm yourself with good information before wading into purchasing these higher value stamps!
