I think its the ink that's over the stamp. If not what would be the proper name for this image on the stamp. Thank You.

Oliver, I think we'd just call that a machine cancel. Looks like a Universal?

The machine cancel is a Columbia, made by the Columbia Postal Supply Co.

The town listings in vol IV of "The Columbia Story" published by the Machine Cancel Society in 1998, show only one Plymouth using a Columbia machine. That would be Plymouth, PA, which used this configuration 1923-26.

It appears as if the stamp has been lifted along the left and bottom edges. I hope this was not done to put a perforation gauge under the stamp. Several ocmpanies make some very nice transparent perforation gauges that can be laid on top of a stamp on a cover to give a very accurate perforation count.

The lift on the left side of the stamp was like that when I received it.
