I have a lot of fdcs, some with a 24kt gold stamp in the middle. I also have multiple fdcs with plate blocks and early 1920-1940's one. Are they worth anything. I got most for free during my kid's stamp meetings.

Stampcollector1960, it is hard to tell. Most FDC's from WWII and later are not worth a whole lot, but some will be OK. From before 1940? You might have to look on ebay to see what they sell for.

The ones with the "gold stamp" are not highly sought. Even when listed for a couple of dollars on ebay, they do not sell, certainly not to knowledgeable collectors. FDC's with plate blocks from the period you mention could be worth a few dollars in some cases. Depends on the stamp, if cacheted, and the designer of the cachet. Common Artcaft or Artmaster would not be worth a lot, but Fleugel and some others are worth something. Just too many variables to make many blanket statements without seeing specific items.

If you search the topic someone else calculated if you could economically recover the gold it would be worth about 50 cents.

The reason was because in my young stamp collector meetings, there are boxes and boxes of stamps, covers, and others.

The value of the gold on those stamps is less than 50 cents especially since th price of gold has tumbled so far down. The cost of the energy to melt it down would be far more than the few cents worth of gold that is in one. You would need many thousands of them to get to the point where it might be worth while to melt them down and even then it would be a very small value.

It never dawned on me that there was actual monetary value in them.

If you have first day covers from the 1920's, please post some images here. Some go for good money.
