China Civil War?

This post card references 'somewhat tense here' and seems to note Peking. But card also notes 'via Moukden' which was capital of Manchuria?
I am wondering why card would be routed this way and if the 'tension' was referring to the pending Civil War? The Civil War didn't start until around August 1927? and this card appears to be postmarked on April 1927. Can anyone shed any light on this card?

"Somewhat tense" was something of an understatement.

I rather liked the idea of someone from (presumably) Pennsylvania referring to one of the world's oldest civilisations as "barbarous" and at "the frontier of civilisation"!

At the time, things were barbarous.

Don, the postal history of China during this time period is very complicated. At least to me! I've tried to find resources for you to read, but nothing seems to be available for free.

My guess is that the author of the post card desired the card to take an overland route on its way to America. This would have been through Moukden and there on the Soviet Union's railway.

"Somewhat tense here" was probably true of almost every moment +/- 25 years, "... but I think everything will proceed as per program" might suggest that the referenced tension was local, eg, a business deal, or distributing Bibles to the idolatrous heathen natives, or snagging a missionary or diplomat in marriage.

Googling the addressee {kathleen hand wilkes-barre PA} brought-up a directory of the DAR (Daughters of The American Revolution).

I do not think I will ever wrap my head around the idea that you could scribble transit instructions on a piece of mail, and that your wishes would be honored.
