Just bought this cover,and would like to know if it is possible to know the origin just by the star cancel.

Appears to be a NY foreign mail cancel. You might check out Bill Weiss web site

This is indeed a New York Foreign Mail cover. The cancellation is Type ST-8P10, an eight-pointed star. Bill Weiss categorized this as a common cancel as it was in use for at least four years (April 1871 - April 1875).

The numbers I am seeing in the Hamburg marking look more like 78 than 48 to me. This would seem to be more likely as well given that the stamp seems to be the 1873 Continental Banknote - Hard Paper six cent. Though it could be one of the 1870-71 with or without grill varietites, but given the date and the relative abundance the 1873 seems more likely. I think it is an attractive cover.
