Are there any collectors for these kind of covers?

Sadly someone has written down the postal history on the cover itself :(.

Thanks.

Remco

Nice item. The written "postal history" is actually the routing instructions as directed by the sender, which was used to calculate the postage. Hopefully an expert will see this and be able to comment on the rate for each leg of the flight.

This cover is from the first North American flight of the Hindenburg airship that took place from May 6 to May 14, 1936. The Sieger catalog value is either 30 or 40 Euros depending upon the type of arrival stamp on the back of the envelope. The variety of U.S. air mail stamps on the cover may add some extra value to certain U.S. collectors.

Strange cover in that I see no dates. Surely the P. O. in Los Angeles would have cancelled the envelope.

May 12-May 14: Lakehurst-Frankfurt (49hr13min)

Neeskens, don`t they classify the flights separately? That is, the first North American flight would be simply the flight to Lakehurst. Sorry to nitpick; I really don't know.

The first North American flight took place over two legs:

May 6 to May 9 -- Frankfurt to Lakehurst
May 12 to May 14 -- Lakehurst to Frankfurt

Mail franked with U.S. postage would have flown on the second leg.

Picture of the back.

Isn't it a bit of overkill maybe?

This looks great. (I wouldn't want the envelope carelessly opened either!)

I continue to be amazed that people wrote routing instructions on mail & expected those instructions to be honored.
