What is the difference between the 1902 and 1905 issues of the 1,2, 3, 5 and 7 k stamps. Scott 55-59. The Catalog that I have says that the Numerical background is different. But I can't figure out which is which.

Thanks for your help.

I didn't think Scott made a distinction between them.

The Stanley Gibbons Catalog indicates that the 1905 design changed the background. That the background was without the circular frame lines in the corners.

I wonder how accurate this statement is. (It`s from Wikipedia.)

"In 1889 the designs were changed again, this time to introduce thunderbolts across the posthorns underneath the double-headed eagle, and in printings after 1902 the usual grain of the paper was changed to be vertical."

Would this mean that the 1902 printing was on paper with a horizontal grain?

The 1889-92 issue is on horizontally laid paper, the 1902-05 on vertically laid. I don't think the paper changed in 1905 for those issued where the network background was amended.
