Quote: I am seeing the same F on the first Burnside cover as being Feby 1st. With that I would think he wrote it on the first and mailed it on the third of February. That sounds about right to me too. I think you have it. Quote: I understand the date on the second Burnside cover is past the Feb. 4th 1879 date. Does that stamp also appear to be the Continental soft paper? The two stamps appear to be on the same paper, and given the brief interval I would not be surprised that they came from the same sheet. However, as a technical point, the Continental Bank Note Co. ceased to exist as an independent entity as of the date of the merger. The same location, presses, paper stock, and personnel were still being used to fulfill the postage stamp contract, but now under the name of the American Bank Note Co. So the philatelic convention is to follow the corporate naming of the stamp producers according to the merger date. If it could be established that both stamps are in fact from the same sheet, it would present an interesting case study. |

For my 100th post, I have looked at the definition of "Esquire" in early history; It was given as a title of distinction, meaning, gentleman or old english, under Knighthood. When I stated George Hunt was an attorney it was only because of the title given on so many mailing's. ??? I am not sure.
Census records I have seen, indicate George Hunt was a silversmith, and jeweler manufacturer.
Senator Burnside referred to Levi as Esq on the Feby 3rd cover.

Quote: What would need to be done to take these two stamps on the Burnside covers to the next level? I addressed this in a direct email to you I sent this past Sunday. Not sure you got it since there has been no response. Please let me know if you got the message. |

Good Piece of detective work! I was not surprised to learn that George Hunt was a jeweler. I could be wrong, but it seems that he once had an office on the 2nd floor of building then on Dorrance St., where it forms northwest corner with Weybosset St. The building there now is multi story and has donut shop in the corner store. I used to bring watches, clocks to a very elderly jeweler and watchmaker, Jacobsen I think, on 2nd floor. excellent work. May still be there, about 90 y.o.
Anyway, I talk too much and he once mentioned Olney & Hunt and mentioned they were friends with Metcalfs. This got my attention because of my love of history and knowledge of Metcalf influence and their enormous wealth from my dealings with R. I. Hospital Trust Co., which you may know had a huge trust department. We talked for some time. Olneyville section of Providence named after the Olneys, still has that huge Sunrise Mill (Now called Atlantic Mills) stretching along Manton Avenue and the river. Billionaires, still.
All of this gets to Mill Brook, New York. I don't see any military rank indicated on Hunt's N.Y. mail, but some of it dates during Civil War. And I know that the Metcalf's owned a big textile mill in Auburn, N.Y., Auburn Woolen Co. but thats way above Warren County. Also they had interest in a factory there that made horse drawn mowers for farms. Will look for the name. And were on the boards of banks. All the usual stuff. The big honcho up there I believe was Col. or Cpt. Edwin Metcalf.
Something more for you to chew on! |

Thanks Hoxie454; As I had mentioned in an earlier thread, My Dad was the head of the Proof Dept at R.I. Hospital Trust, before they had computers. He could not come home at night until the books settled. He would often speak of the "East Side" money in the Trust Dept. There seems to be connection between the Bush, Hunt, & Metcalf covers. In the 20th group, 3rd down, To Edwin A Bush, who was "the postmaster for Mill Brook", for Mrs George Hunt". There are other examples. In the 18th group, 3rd down, I noticed To George Hunt, in care of Hunt & Owen Jewellers. Old English double L's. A twenty-first group; |

Dear Members, It has been awfully quiet lately, they say "silence is deafening"! Other than the excitement during intermission, over the Burnside covers, there's barely been a word. Based on the Metcalf/Hunt proximity and relationship with Brown University, I thought there might be more discussion regarding some stamps being from the same sheets. While posting my seventeenth group I asked "I would love to hear about the last two green stamps in the sixteenth group. Can anyone help ID these two stamps"? Never heard a word back. To essayk, I responded to your last post on Wednesday. stating I may have deleted the message you sent to my email by accident. Since then I sent you three requests to resend. Not sure if you received them. I do appreciate all of the help I have received. Thanks to all of you for the interest you have shown. We seem to average 100 hits a day. If everyone is tired of this thread, I can certainly stop. I have enjoyed posting and speaking of my family. There are still many unanswered questions. I will look forward to any responses no matter what direction they take. Respectfully, Bob A twenty-fourth group; |

I have twice sent the same post to you via the list. Both are long. Apparently you did not receive them. Today I have sent a short one as a test. Please let me know if you receive it. |

essayk, No, I did not receive a test or short note. The only mail I have is the notification of your new post. Maybe I have a problem. In the past I have sent two requests to the monitors, both were unanswered. Sorry if I vented a little last post. I have checked my email more in the last week, than ever in my life. It seemed like I was alone out here. It is a lot of work scanning & posting. I do enjoy it!
