Toronto Enquiry Office

Does anyone out there have any information on the TORONTO ENQUIRY OFFICE? When did it open? Where was it located? How long did it remain in service?

The office was opened for the sole purpose of handling bulk mailings after the rate of one cent per pound for bulk mailings of newspapers and periodicals was revived in January 1894.

According to George Arfken's book CANADA'S SMALL QUEEN ERA 1870-1897 very little is known about the office itself.

Thank you KGB. I missed that source. Even following this info the story of the ENQUIRY OFFICE is still somewhat vague. Having a separate room in the Toronto Post Office makes sense and, at least, answers one of my questions.

I did find a hint in another source that the Enquiry Office was a separate department in the main post office. They had a separate telephone (telegraph?) account.

Where did you find that bit of info? Library & Archives Canada database does not recognize the existence of this office.

The main Post Office in Toronto was located at Bay and Front Streets on the southwest corner.

gport, it was a report to the Parliament on expenditures. There was no free access to the document so I didn't place the link here. (I only saw it in 'snippet' view.)
