God help me, but I've taken an interest in covers. I've seen a good number of the older ones that have been marked with a cross (of sorts.) It's never elaborate; just a vertical line centered on the cover and one that is horizontal, again centered. Is there some significance to this?

The crossed blue lines supposedly date from the time that the British post office used blue string to bundle registered mail.
