Hi everyone, just joined the forum and looking for some help.

I recently came into possession of a whole bunch of stamps, many of them in individual plastic sleeves. I don't know much about stamps even though I think they are so very neat. I am looking for recommendations from the pros on what to do with them. Not sure how to find their value. Are they better kept and sold as a collection? Separately? It seems like they are all used. Some appear very old. If you can point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

I imagine a collection like this one would be sold as one lot. I should warn you, though, that the stamps are fairly common and would not merit much of a selling price. I think the old rule of thumb is that every stamp is worth at least 15 cents; this acknowledges the bother the seller goes through to provide a stamp and allows him a small profit. That old rule of thumb, however, is not supported by many, many of the auctions on ebay where a collection like this one might go for a couple of dollars.

I don't know about the set of six train topicals or the odd non-US stamp that may be in there, but all the US stamps appear to be very common, and of minimal value. I would recommend keeping them if you like them.

If you wanted to sell them, they're probably best sold all as one lot because even if you sold all of them together, the group you showed in the images probably has a retail value of well under $10 total.

Thank you both so much. I didn't really expect they would be worth much but some seemed so old and interesting. I will probably keep them. The strange part is that someone went through the trouble of putting them all in sleeves. The train ones were in a package that read something like North Korean trains set of 6 Falcon Stamp Co.
There are also thousands of baseball cards, magic cards, coin sets, comic books, old money etc. The person seems to have been an undescriminating collector.

Thanks again

There's a lot more money to be made in selling comic books. Currency and coins all depend on their condition, for the most part, unless you have something uncommon. And sometimes--but only sometimes--one stumbles on a baseball card that has great re-sale value.

Congratulations! These are the sorts of stamps one collects for fun and, since they came with all sorts of other collectibles, it seems we can be confident that the original owner enjoyed them ... we hope you will, too. Cheers,

Don't sell such a large collection as yet. Its better if you hold on now. And the original owner seems to have taken great pains in preserving the stamps.

I would write to Mystic Stamp co. and ask them for a catalog. They will almost certainly send you one for free. Then you can start sorting the stamps. Be careful: the prices in Mystic's catalog are what they will charge you for a stamp, sent the next day. They are way higher than anything you could get on ebay.

"Old" is a relative term. Most of the stamps you show are not as old as I am.
