Edit I found the listing, didn't realize it was yours. This apparently was not the case. Now I'm thinking that perhaps the buyer accidently hit an extra '0' when typing the offer?
I never have had it happen before the offer higher than the asking price. I thought that maybe it was late at night when the offer was made or one to many beers?
Could it be that the buyer really wanted the item? It is practically exhibition quality with those red handstamped 2½d PD plus the 4d and 1d (possibly registration fee 4d plus late fee 1d ?) postage rate.
Could be the buyer is a medical doctor or a business owner and he doesn't want the cover to get away from him .I gone to stamp auction and seen the same thing ,where the opening bid is $2,000 and someone shouts out $3500 as the first bid and then gets the lot .
Usually when I've seen shout outs like that it's from an agent who has competing bids on his book and he knows it can't sell for less than the shout out.
