You may well have seen this piece from the RPS site, but I found it fascinating - not least for the evidence of the levels of employee dishonesty surrounding this expensive stamp.

Just found a website which values money from years gone by - according to that, the stamp had an equivalent face value of a £450 stamp in today's money. That's £670 US dollars.

And we think modern stamps are money-spinners!

I hadn't realised that so few were actually used for postage - almost all of them were used for one or other kind of accounting, hence the scope for washing off cancellations or retrieving them from waste. A shame that the pale ultramarine colour originally intended for the telegraph stamp wasn't used - it looks amazing.
