I'm having trouble distinguishing Scott Austria #163 and 167 . The sellers on ebay seem to have the same problem . There is another similar stamp Scott 171 but it's on granite paper which is easy to ID .Right now my 163 and 167 look the same so one is a mistake . Any help appreciated . Bernie

Could you maybe post a scan or a picture of the stamps in question?

I'm not trying to be smart, but if they look the same, perhaps one has been misidentified, and they are actually both the same number. The catalogue describes one as 'deep violet' and the other as just 'violet'.

I just have a few early Austrians, I don't necessarily collect them but have accumulated some just because I like the design. Though I don't have either of the number you mention, I do have a #160 and #164. With these two the different blues (dark vs. light) are quite distinct.

See where I'm going with this?

167 is listed as being printed on ordinary paper. I`m not certain of its significance as compared to 163 but I will look into it.

Somehow I thought the two were on different papers, chalk surfaced and normal. Most of the color differences were due to the printing characteristics of the different surfaces.
