I have an antique document handwritten in German and because I don't speak the language I'm not too sure what the document actually is. I've been able to translate just some bits and pieces of it. The years 1834, 1838 and 1864 are written in 3 different places. The document also has a raised seal. My question for this forum is about the stamp in the upper left hand corner. From what I've been able to glean it is a duty stamp. I've uploaded a number of photos of the document to my server. 1 photo has been included with this post but much larger res photos on my server. Any info I can get on the stamp and its value (if any) would be much appreciated. Thanks all for your help! Here's the photos link: http://danielherzner.com/stamp.htm

NyNyDanDan, a very welcome to this forum. I have a couple of questions . First of all, why do you call this an 1834 stamp, if the 1864 date is written on the document? The stamp I see is dted 1864 - seems much more likely for this type of stamp. Also, the stamp that I am looking at is not mint by any stretch of the imagination. Can you please elaborate, or maybe edit the heading of this thread?

Peter

This is a general revenue stamp issued in November of 1862 from the state of Prussia. My 1992 Erler Norton Catalog of the Adhesive Revenue Stamps of Germany volume IV lists it as #11 (15 silber groschen) with gray black center. It catalogs at .20 U.S.

The Erler Norton catalogs are very useful and complete, but the catalog values are notoriously low. If you could find your stamp in a dealer's stock, you'd probably pay $1.00 - $2.00. Dealers on ebay, who assume you don't have a catalog, would ask more. On a document, you'd probably pay at least $5.00 for it, depending on the document.

As revenues go, the Barefoot catalogs (U.K.) tend to price on the high side.

Hope this is helpful.

The stamp is a Prussian general revenue stamp from the set which first saw use on 1 November 1862. Erler-Norton catalog value as of 1992 was US$0.20, but that's for a stamp off-document.

I'll take a stab at the translation, but the handwriting is tough.
