I just came into possession of the below stamp and can't seem to find it in Scott. It is severely clipped across the top, but this issue seems to have been only produced in shades of rose and this is not that.

Scratching my head on an ID.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Al

Breefmack,
your stamp also looks a little oxidised (not surprising given the climate in the Bahamas) which makes the colour a little darker than expected from a fresh issue. This kind of alteration is quite common and gives all sorts of headaches when trying to sort out shades.

Thanks folks!

I'm working on a new Palo hingeless album, which doesn't give catalog numbers, but lists color. There is no brownish-rose shown there or in the Scott catalog. Here is a new scan for side-by-side comparison of the examples of this design that I have.

Does Stanley Gibbons list an issue date for SG#22? Scott only lists #6(dull rose), #13(rose), #13a(rose lake), #13b(bright rose), #18(rose), #18a(deep rose), #18b(dull rose), and #21(rose) with issue dates of 1862, 1863-65, 1863-81 and 1882-98 for each major number variety. Just trying to figure out where I need to insert the extra mount on my pages!

Thanks again,

Al

Brownish rose (p 12 1/2) and rose-lake (p 14) are from the 1863-80 group, wmk Crown CC.

It would be worth checking the watermarks for the stamps you have. The brownish rose only comes in a reversed watermark. Some other shades only have normal watermarks while other shades can be normal or reversed. There are also quite a few with inverted watermarks. The brownish rose shade fits in the time frame of 1863-1877 according to my SG catalogue of the British Commonwealth.

I do see a reversed "C" watermark on the brownish one. On the other two, I can see parts of a crown and a normal "C", but no "A" or second "C" - I assume they are both SC#25, since they are perf. 12.

Thank you everyone for the good info,

Al
