I've recently returned to collecting and developed an interest in Spain stamps after a trip there last fall. To get started, I purchased a very nice collection in a Scott album (pretty complete from the early 1950s to about 1980 with many of the more common earlier issues to boot) and having a great time. One thing that I've been struck by is the number of semi-postal issues. My guess is that these were both quite common and popular back in the day, given their number and generally low catalog values. Any suggestions as to where I might be able to learn a bit more about this aspect of Spanish postal history? Thanks!

Welcome to the board , not sure of your question . Do you want information about the subjects on each semi=postal stamps or on why the Spanish Government issued them and maybe who those extra funds went to.

HI, floortrader, happy to be here! I'm interested in learning a bit more about the larger factors, be they cultural, political,, historical, or what have you, around their use and seeming popularity. Easy enough to find the basic details about individual issues but would like to understand the bigger picture.

RK

Charity stamps, as they're known in Europe, were, and still are, widely issued by most countries in continental Europe (not Great Britain). I'm not sure that Spain's use of them is any more extensive than that of Belgium, Switzerland, France etc.

Thanks for the context, Geoff. This is my first stamp expedition outside of US, Canada, and GB so plenty to learn. May need to invest in an EDIFIL catalog and brush up on my Spanish reading abilities.

RK, be on the look out for semi-postals from the time of the civil war. These are perhaps more interesting and sought after.
