I really like the imagination that went into designing some of the early stamps.

Me too. Lots of "classical" themes, Mythology, etc. Do you know what the scene is?
Thanks for sharing, KirkS |

Issued June 1st, 1935, this special Delivery stamp shows "The Allegory of Progress". Very art deco for the era. The Maple Leaves along the side are the emblem of Canada.

David:
On second glance, I do see it's a great wheel they're turning. I first thought the figure at the 1:00 position with a helmet might be Mercury?
Whatever, it is a nice image. I did notice the maple leaves; although they're not in the "current" configuration.

Tina, as the modern era of postage began with use of stamps, many countries expanded Their services. When some decide to handle 'parcels' they made specials stamps requiring that only the new stamp could pay for that 'parcel' service. Later the quicker special delivery service and later still air mails. Now in the US as long as you pay the rate for the various services it does not matter what stamps are used, just as long as it is paid. |

That is a great stamp ikandiggit. Some of the Early Canadians are among my favorites. Here is one of my favorite pages. |

The beauty of the engraved stamps of the "classic era" become even more impressive when you consider the process of engraving the plates and over all what little respect these little pieces of art get in the regular world. |

Wow, two more great ones. I'll guess Icarus for the top, but I don't know about the bottom.

Checked Scott, I was close -- it's Daedalus. The other is simply referred to as "Allegory of Flight". Here's the info for Daedalus: KirkS |

Oh, cool! That Special Delivery looks to have been cancelled in Kenora, part of my old stomping grounds, about two hours away from here. |

Interesting that the artwork for this beautiful Canadian stamp was by an American, Alonzo Earl Foringer. He was born in Kaylor, Pennsylvania on February 1, 1878. In addition to designing and painting many famous murals throughout the United States he was sought after as a bank note designer for American, Canadian and European banks. His engraving on this stamp, issued June 1, 1935, called 'Carrier' certainly is impressive and adequately conveys the message of 'special postal delivery'. |
