A few questions on some more Postage Due Stamps if I may. I'm interested in these two stamps to purchase if they check out hopefully for a far price. Neither has a cert so I was going to ask here to the more knowledgable before I wasted any money on purchasing but not on a cert. Also, it would be appreciated if I could ask what the forum thought was a fair price. I see other perf 12's but they are all Wmk with 190 or 191. If I could see the watermark then it would be easier identifying. Also the first couple of perfs on the bottom right look funny to me. The first stamp is listed as a J30 vermilion. It has no watermark that I can see. It is perf 12 and has a crease in the right corner bottom. It has no gum and no hinge or remnant no cancel that I can see unless its in the bottom left corner. That to me makes it almost as being used. Looks like dirt or minor stain. There is a couple small stains in top perf area. As far as the grade itself is concerned it looks like a F-VF. Please let me know what your thought are. I have a somewhat old Scotts but there are faults that will lower the value in my favor if decided to purchase. The second stamp has J53 on the back which would make it carmine lake, dull rose or vermilion. I don't know because I'm colored blind. He states it is J60 Rose and the J53 is a mistake. It is a perf 10 and I don't see a watermark on the back and it is used and a pre-cancel from Wichita Kansas. The grade only looks like Average to me and I don't know if the cancel would help or hurt. Also the perfs look odd to me on the left side. Your thought are appreciated. http://s784.photobucket.com/user/Ne...wz.jpeg.html [/URL http://s784.photobucket.com/user/Ne...v2.jpeg.html [/URL Thanks Newby

the top stamp looks more like perf 11 than 12 and even if it is perf 12 I wouldnt bet on the j30 plan, over the years I have got dozens of stamps in albums I bought in the j30 slot and not even 1 has been a j30. |

Thanks jim6092252 for the reply. It's a perf 12 on all sides. The perf holes don't match up on the 11 gauge. Could it be J32 instead as this is the only 2c D2 perf 12 style left that has no wmk? Since you have acquired many of this type does the color to you look vermilion or deep claret as this would be the kicker. I really can't because I am color blind when it comes to different shades of a color. A carmine rose, rose, deep claret rose carmine, rose red pale rose and so forth all look the same to me. One other question is a carmine rose deeper or lighter in color to a vermilion or deep claret? It doesn't help when the stamps are so old either as I'm sure fading comes in to question.
Thanks again for your help it is certainly appreciated.

Hey rwoodennnickel thanks for replying. I am using a black water tray with Ronsolnol fluid to check. Then I put it on the stamp then on to the scanner to enlarge the picture.
Thanks again. |

I would pass on both. In fact, I would never buy J29-J30 or J59-J60 without a certificate - particularly when you state you are color blind and so much depends on the shade of postage due stamps in this era.
Regardless of its actual Scott#, the top stamp looks used, badly damaged at lower right, a crease or tear into top center. Not centered anywhere near F-VF. A space filler.
And the lower stamp has short perfs at left, creasing to several other perfs, poorly centered. Not too much better than space filler quality. |

Thanks John for replying. I knew that they were less desirable but my album has holes for these and the others you mentioned. I was trying to get them as fillers to plug up a couple of those holes. I knew it would be wasted time and money to get certs as I knew that PFE,PSAG ect... wouldn't cert because of the damage. That is why I was asking the more knowledgeable people here because if they would pass here I could get them next to nothing. I will be giving them back tomorrow.
Thanks again for the knowledge. |

The various cert-ing organizations would all issue certs on the ID they find each stamp to be, but the grading option would be the useless part. If your dealer really thinks they are J30 and J60, then he should send for certs. |

Newby, if you can get them for next to nothing.............!? All depends on how much "next to nothing" is. Please remember that whatever you pay for them you might not ever get back for them should you decide to sell!

Petert4522 true that. True that. The cert would probably cost more than the purchase price. I have never had anything certified but I know they are not cheap.
Thanks |

In addition being perf 12 and no watermark, Scott J30 and J29 glow orange under long wave UV. J31 and J32 are "dead" under UV. The bright claret large postage dues Scott J22 to J28 also glow orange under long wave UV, while the red brown and brown do not.

Thanks cfrphoto for the tip. Is that long wave or short wave. But not like a black light correct?
It's appreciated very much. Newby |

Newby, read cfrphoto's post. He states LONG wave. And no, a black light is not usable because it's light is all over the place. You really need a long wave source for stamps! We have had several rally good posts about UV lamps on this forum if you need one. Search this forum for "UV lamps"!
