For a friend's birthday present, I cut a heavyweight printout of a still from a Star Wars film into quarters, to have each quarter serviced as a postcard. I'll then reassemble the quarters and frame them for him.

I sent to Force, Pennsylvania for a postmark:

Not only was the strike fantastic, I got the sweetest note back from the postmaster:

I've gotten some nice comments back from postmasters when I send in requests, but this tops them all.

Anyone else have examples of great comments?

People are at their best when they graciously accept some odd circumstance, such as being postmaster of a town with a notable name.

Once upon a time, a magazine named former President George HW Bush as one of the ten most boring people in New York.

He hosted a dinner party for the other nine.

Cheers,

Mmm. That almost makes Mr. Bush interesting for doing that.

Here in the northern parts of England, a Force is another name for a decent-sized waterfall, and is derived from the Norse "foss".

I thought I would follow up with how the reassembled cards look.

Yes, the quarter in the upper-right is a little bit off of square. This will be matted to hide the white border, and I think it looks pretty good. I'm pleased.

Thanks! And the last, hard-to-read-in-the-scan one is "Friendship", which works with a double meaning (Han and Chewie, and my old friend and me).

Dear Joshua,

Thank you for this picture showing how you want the cancellation placed. I try to do my best and sometimes I never know if a collector wants it below or to the left of the stamp. (Especially if the envelope is blank & then they add the design later.) I have been a collector myself. I know that a lot of people applying the cancellations have never done so before and this really will help them. I have done a lot of pictorial cancellations over the years and actually took a few tips from [a] Kansas City philatelic clerk and still don't know how some people want them to look. Hopefully your taking the time to do this helps you get better quality cachets.

It did seem to have the desired effect, because it turned out great:

I wrote up details on my design, and on Rocky Bleier himself, here: http://collectpostmarks.com/cover/rocky-bleier
