Area66, I collect among others Switzerland. There is a Swiss issue nicknamed 'Standing Helvetia' that is the equivalent of the Washington/Franklin's here. The Zumstein catalog devotes approximately 80 pages to this issue. Scott lists them all on about 1/8 of a page!

This is the old tread that start this one Ho boy just finished to do 10 pages to replace the 4 of Steiner's and this only for the KRAJCAR series of Hungary, no fancy colours. Scott is completely in the ditch, the KRAJCAR have 2 kinds of triangle, Stereotype and Electrotype, 2 type of 1k and 2 1 Ft, Scott make no mention of them. I'm using my new Hungarian catalogue, but Michel is base on it, so practically Michel pages. The difference between my new pages and Steiner's are as big as the difference between Steiner's and Scott International. Steiner's pages ( Scott) contain only 40% of the KRAJCAR series here an exemple, it's not finished yet, I just made the rough work Even Yvert show the type of triangles in their catalogues |

Just for the record, for Japan the Sakura is not the specialized catalogue, although it's still extremely helpful, because it has color illustrations of every stamp, plus at least somewhat more detailed listings for the early definitive series.
However, the real specialized catalogue for Japan is the 3-volume set: JSCA (which doesn't quite stand for anything), also called the "Nissen" in Japanese. ("Nissen" would be a compound word: "Ni" for the first syllable in Japan (like in "Nihon" or "Nippon"), and "sen" for the first syllable in "senmon", which is the Japanese word for specialty or specialized. ... Nissen does not stand for Cup-a-Noodles, in this case anyway!)
Similar to what Peter describes above for the Standing Helvetia, what Scott lists in 3 column inches for one early definitive Japan set takes up about 80 pages in the JSCA. |

Czechoslovakia/Czech Republic/Slovakia/Bohemia & Moravia -- Pofis catalogs
Also, remember that the Scott worldwide catalogs are 'standard' catalogs. They are not intended to be specialized catalogs. |

The Pofis catalogs are print catalogs in color. There are several of them: Czechoslovakia 1918-1939; Protektorat Cechy & Morava (i.e., Bohemia & Moravia); Czechoslovakia 1945-1992; there are also catalogs for Czech Republic and Slovakia. The catalogs are published periodically (not every year). They are only in Czech language but following the basic information is not too difficult. I think they are excellent publications. The catalogs can generally (if in stock) be ordered from the U.S. Society for Czechoslovak Philately (SCP). They are significantly less expensive for SCP members than non-members. For Israel, Palestine, and Holyland, I use Bale's.
I also have an older Michel for Israel. |
