A great online source for purchasing specialized catalogs is at Dutch retailer Collectura http://www.collectura.com/pwm/index...ex&cPath=136 many works not easy to get available, pricing in Euros, tends to be a touch cheaper than Vera Trinder in the UK Argentina - Guillermo Jalil (GJ) Brazil - RMH Indonesia (independent) - Zonnebloem (published in Netherlands) South Africa - South African Stamp Catalogue Turkey - Isfila Uruguay - Ciardi (not published since 2006 but available online as PDF at http://www.clubfilatelicodeluruguay...tCiardi.html ) |

jorgesurcl is that book still available? I looked at the Sociedad Filatelica de Chile website but when I click on link to the catalog it comes up with error. I would love to get a copy of this catalog so I have a good Chile reference in my collection.
(Also looking for other Latin American specialized catalogs. I have Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil covered but would like to get catalogs for the other Latin American nations if possible)
ETA - got the link to work have sent email to the sociedad to see if book can still be purchased

And for Finland there are Norma and LaPe catalogs (have reviewed both of them on my blog). Both catalogs are issued annually. Most editions of Norma and Lape are 'thin' simplified versions, but every 3-5 years there's the 'fat' specialized edition.
Choosing between the two is somewhat difficult because despite the similarities both weigh in slightly different sections/eras, so in ideal situation you've got copies of both.

I am bit confused as to the intent of this thread. How is the term 'catalog' defined? We have a habit of treating price lists as catalogs (i.e. SG). But when a publication contains retail prices instead of an estimate of market value, is it a price list or a catalog? For the purposes of this thread, is stampworld.com considered a catalog? If so, can ebay then be called a catalog? Both can be used to lookup and identify stamps. I note that the OP mentioned specialized catalogs in his first post. So perhaps the bigger question is… are publications like Scott, SG, or other worldwide catalogs not to be included since they are not specialized? So is the intent to list what is considered the definitive reference work for a particular country? The most definitive reference publications may or may not contain current values, they are often not updated for a long time. So how important, when determining what to list, is the inclusion of current value? Don |

Quote: definitive reference work for a particular country? In fact we should call it "advance reference work for a particular country" . I'm more interested in the information to help to ID stamps and the different variety of design of the stamps than the value. I don't think ebay and Stampsworld fit in the description of advance material |

Here's an effort at definition based on the replies so far: A catalog for purposes of this list is a publication that purports to list, identify and describe, with or without valuation, all the stamps of a particular country or political unit of the past or present, with particularized data or commentary for that country or unit reflecting focused study by the writers, and is subject to editing or publication by a single editing entity or publication. Based on this, current pricing is not a prerequisite. Stampworld.com and ebay are not included because they either do not fit the definition of specialized, or in the case of ebay are not edited for accuracy by an identifiable editor or entity, nor comprehensive. |

I agree that Stampworld prices are not realistic. But using CJ's nicely worded definition, we aren't ignoring values as a criteria for inclusion in this list? Is Stampworld good for identifying stamps? Don |

I think stampworld is most good for identifying modern (post-1945) commemorative issues in particular, and to a lesser extent post-1945 definitives (they tend to not list many varieties within definitive issues). My main use of it is to get an idea of what stamps were issued after the publication date of my paper catalogs. My set of Scott 2012 Catalogs for ex only goes to mid/late 2010 for listings, so stampworld gives me an idea of what stamps have been issued since then so I can plot out space for the stamps on my Lighthouse Vario pages. Eventually when I update my basic catalog from 2012 to something more recent (maybe get the 2016s after the 2017s are in the marketplace) I can replace the stampworld numbers in my page planogram with Scott numbers.
For pre-1945 issues, especially for anyone wanting a degree of speciaization as say area66 shows with those classic Hungarian issues, stampworld is vastly inferior in quality (though, to SWs credit, users can upload information about varieties etc to the administrators, so in some ways one can say SW listings are as good as the quality of data the user community is willing to contribute) |

Quote: got the link to work have sent email to the sociedad to see if book can still be purchased DJCMHOH - The catalogue is still available. At this time (February) we are here in summer and part of the Society's staff is on vacation. Probably you will have a response to your email starting next week. |
