Was curious about this one. I only have a dozen or so 1898 battleship cancels but this one was odd to me.

Was there a reason to cancel it again?

I would hazard a guess that the horizontal cancel was printed onto the stamp before use, and the vertical one when it was actually used.

W.D.M.A. stands for World's Dispensary Medical Association. In addition to having a listed M&M issue (RS272, RS273, the same design as the R.V.Pierce stamps), they were also wholesalers so the printed cancel might have been the general cancel and the handstamp specific to a product or just the actual place on sale date.
